Pretty in Pink

Steve Evans - Boots HC Umpire

At Boots Hockey Club we have a range of members who umpire our games. Some do both, play & umpire, some just umpire and some who have retired from playing and stay on to umpire for us. Our Umpires range from having Level 2 accreditation to just trying it out, like myself. Anyone who fancies having a go at umpiring is encouraged to do so with help being given by umpire shadowing or being put on a course to learn the basics. At our summer tournament our players were encouraged to all have a go whilst a more experienced umpire helped them along. This also included our youth players practising their umpiring, as it is included in their training.

We hope to be running an umpiring course soon, so anyone who wishes to see what it's all about can sign up and go through the training which has a short exam at the end of it. The exam consists of a multiple choice section, a section that requires you to write a number of answers on given questions and the last section asks you to explain the answers in short paragraphs. It is pretty hard to fail, I passed after all!!! At the end of this you walk away with a set of cards, a handbook, and a whistle!! Going on an umpiring course and becoming an umpire is believed to really help your playing as well. It clarifies some rules, shows you what is allowed and it might even give you an idea of how to get away with some little moves! If nothing else, being an umpire gives you an excellent excuse to wear pink!!
