Boots Hockey Club scores double success at Rushcliffe Sports Awards

Wednesday 14th July 2010
Last week Boots Hockey Club celebrated success as it picked up two awards at the Rushcliffe Sports Awards.

The club based in the Lady Bay area of West Bridgford not only won Amateur Team of the Year for the achievements of its Ladies 1st team, but also Club of the Year for its progression and development within the local community.

Boots Ladies 1st Team accept award for Amateur Team of the Year

Boots Ladies 1st Team accept award for Amateur Team of the Year from Rushcliffe Mayor, Councillor Mrs Marie Males.

Boots Ladies 1st XI which secured promotion from Midlands Division Two in 2008/09, went on to finish the 2009/10 season as runners up in the Midlands Division One. Newly promoted into the Midlands Premier league, the team will now play one league below the National England Hockey League.

Philip Short, Boots Hockey Club Captain, said: "We're thrilled to have won both these awards. These achievements are down to the sheer drive and ambition of the players and coaches, as well as the dedication of volunteers and committee members, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make the club such a success.

"Midlands Premier League is by far the highest league any of the Boots teams have played in and it's a huge achievement for the Ladies 1's to secure promotion two years running. We're now looking forward to the start of the new season and welcome players of all abilities and ages to join our growing friendly club."

The club has celebrated many other triumphs this season. The Mens 1st XI were awarded the East Midlands Umpires Award for Hospitality and Fair play, while the mixed side won an award for the friendliest club in the Chestnuts Friday Mixed League. The newly formed U10 Boys team represented Nottinghamshire in the Midlands Minis Competition, where they reached the quarter finals and were invited by England Hockey to go on and play in the National Minis Finals Invitational Tournament.

Over the past few years Boots Hockey Club has developed from a small, friendly club to a large, thriving community through increasing membership and an ever growing junior section. It prides itself as one of Nottingham's friendliest hockey clubs, hosting four mens and four ladies teams as well as a social mixed side.

The rapidly expanding club is always looking for new players and plans to introduce a 5th mens and 5th ladies side for the coming season.

What a Season?!

Boots Hockey Club have just recorded one of their most successful seasons ever with no less than 3 teams earning promotions and two of those teams claiming the Champions title of their respective divisions.

The Ladies 1st XI, despite losing their final match 4-3 since found out that second placed North Notts had also lost, therefore giving them the Midlands 2 division title by 3 clear points and promotion to Midlands 1 next season. A promotion more than deserved through the hard work of coach Tom, captain Fran and the rest of her team.

Ladies 3s celebrate their 9-1 win and promotion! Following the lead of the 1st XI, our Ladies 3rd XI put together a run of 6 wins including the thrashing of North Notts 9-1 on the final day of the season to overcome their rivals in a very tight Notts Division 2. The top 4 finished within as many points, ensuring the fight went right to the wire. New captain Ruth and coach Gareth will be over the moon with the team's performance this year, conceding only 11 goals all season.

To show that the men of the club can also compete, our Mens 2nd XI also earned promotion back at the beginning of March. An enormous squad including some very talented new players helped captain JC guide a very competitive team to second place in East Midlands Division 1 and promotion to East Midlands Premier.

Ladies 2s enjoy a night out after another great season Elsewhere, the newly promoted Ladies 2nd XI finished a very creditable 4th place on goal difference. A truly remarkable position after only just earning promotion to Notts Premier, a league in which we've previously struggled. No such struggles this season for captain Caz and her team.

With 3 ladies promotions in 2 years, the Ladies 4th XI have also seen a big improvement in availability and results. A team that's only a few years old also managed a brilliant 4th place finish in Notts Division 3.

The Mens 1st XI continued a run of mid table finishes with 7th place in a strong East Midlands Premier. Just not scoring quite enough goals to compete with the top teams but recording the only victory against the otherwise unbeaten top two and showing there is bags of potential for incumbant captain Rob.

Steve, captain of the Mens 3rd XI will be delighted with the way his combination of youth and experience has merged to play some excellent hockey in a very tight East Midlands 1. Finishing 6th, they remained in contention of promotion right the way until the last few weeks.

Finally, the Mixed XI still remain in the National Mixed Plate competition and will be fighting for a Quarter Final draw in Burton on the 26th April - the day after our End of Season Dinner! Some good fun social hockey has been enjoyed throughout the season and we look forward to Summer Thursday nights, the mixed league at Highfields and of course Tour - this year at Hornament - Southgate HC on August Bank Holiday.
